IFRRO participates in high-level IP events in the People's Republic of China
On 9-10 September, IFRRO participated in the 2024 International Forum on Copyright and Creative Industries for Sustainable Development, jointly organised by the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
The event was held in the city of Jingdezhen, in east China's Jiangxi Province, and focused on the role of copyright in fostering cultural expressions, the future of sustainable creative ecosystems in the context of digital technologies and diminishing geographical frontiers. The event was attended by senior national and international government representatives, as well as delegates from key global organisations including IFRRO and CISAC. In his opening comments, WIPO Director General Darren Tang noted WIPO’s evolving partnership with China, and highlighted China’s important role in driving economic growth in the creative industries, and in fostering respect for the value of creative works.
In the first session of the conference, IFRRO’s Head of Regional Policy and Public Affairs, Sarah Tran, gave a presentation on the role of copyright policies and measures in protecting and fostering innovation in cultural heritage, including a case study on the excellent collaboration between Australian member, Copyright Agency, and indigenous visual artists. CLASS CEO and IFRRO Board Director, Andrew Fong, gave a presentation on ‘Collective Management of Copyright in the Era of Knowledge Economies’, exploring present and future opportunities and challenges for the CMO sector. Both Sarah Tran and Andrew Fong were also invited to participate in a panel discussion on the impact of new technologies, including generative AI, on creators and rightsholders and the critical role of IP frameworks in protecting and promoting thriving creative ecosystems.
IFRRO’s Head of Regional Policy and Public Affairs, Sarah Tran, was also invited to attend the Third Belt and Road High-Level Conference on Intellectual Property, hosted in Beijing on September 11-12, co-organised by WIPO and the National Intellectual Property Administration of the People’s Republic of China (CNIPA). Bilateral meetings were also held in Beijing with IFRRO member CWWCS as well as the International Publishers’ Coalition in China (IPCC).
The high-level events served to highlight the economic, social, and cultural contributions of creative industries, and IFRRO’s participation the program of activities enabled us to continue to meaningfully advocate for creators’ and rightsholders in the text and image sector, both at a national and international level.
